Call to Action! City Council Anti-Immigrant Grandstanding!

ANOTHER “ANTI-SANCTUARY CITY” RESOLUTION HITTING Colorado Springs City Council! HELP OUT. We need letters written and if you can be there in-person, all the better!
The resolution will be read at the city council meeting at city hall. The meeting begins at 9, public comment likely to open sometime between 10 and 11am, show up a bit early if you want to sign up to speak on the issue. Tell your reps what you think of this bill!
New councilor Roland Rainey has decided that this will be his first notable piece of legislation and it is yet another exclusionary piece of text that paints targets on our friends, families and neighbors in the trend of our conservative leadership, that they do not belong in our city.
Point by point:
– This is a symbolic piece of legislation, it has no legal weight, no enforcement. It is not up to Colorado Springs to interpret or enforce federal regulations.
– Being good shepards of taxpayer dollars is a myth. Having 50 of our police officers camped out at around a DEA raid when it takes hours to respond to tasks that we need resolved as a city is a WASTEFUL USE OF OUR TAXPAYER DOLLARS. I guarantee you’ve had a bad experience with CSPD not accomplishing the tasks you’ve asked of them as public servants.
– Using CSPD to arbitrarily support DEA raids when they cannot do the jobs and complete the assignments that they have actual legal power over is purely hateful.
– THERE IS NO IMMIGRATION CRISIS. This is hyperbolic exclusionary rhetoric. THE CRISIS is that people are being disappeared these days, sometimes out of country, WITHOUT DUE PROCESS for simply utilizing their First Amendment rights, which they have REGARDLESS OF THEIR IMMIGRATION STATUS. If this resolution, or this council, were interested in “enforcing the laws of our land”, they would recognize how hypocritical a resolution like this is. If Mayor Yemi were still on a student visa today, he would be ESPECIALLY vulnerable to being disappeared to a foreign prison if he spoke out against the administration for ANY RIGHTFUL REASON.
– CITY COUNCIL ALREADY HAS PLENTY OF WORK TO DO THAT THEY ARE NOT GETTING TO that isn’t inflammatory discourse that they have NO JURISDICTION OR ENFORCEMENT OVER.
WE HAVE TO PUSH BACK AGAINST THIS. Our councilors against this are currently outnumbered and those support it will sit silent and go with it. This resolution NEEDS TO BE WITHDRAWN ABANDONED and we need to STOP ENTERTAINING THIS WASTE OF OUR RESOURCES. We saw this last year with Dave Donelson’s similar (and similarly poorly written) resolution last year.
